The village of Tihaljina is a populated place located in West Herzegovina, situated alongside the Tihaljina River, 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Grude in the north and 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Ljubuški in the southeast. The first written evidence mentioning Tihaljina dates back to the 15th century, while numerous historical sites and artifacts indicate that this area has been inhabited since the 3rd century. Situated far enough from urban towns and cities, Tihaljina boasts its untouched nature and over 50 river springs, the most well-known being Peć Mlini, where the Tihaljina River originates—a breathtaking subterranean river that changes its name nine times while flowing through the stones and rocks of West and South Herzegovina. In the small picturesque Herzegovinian village of Tihaljina lies the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, renowned for housing one of the most beautiful statues of Mary in the world.
